Frowning still, Damen turned his attention to Laurent, watching the careful bob of his throat as he took a long drink of water. He was being careful with his wording, Damen noticed. Careful in a way Damen hadn't seen in months. There was no mention of him and Damen as lovers, a fact that did not settle well with Damen at all.
And yet, the words he did speak unsettled him in an entirely different way.
'We are friends,' he said, masking his surprise. 'And equals. And you would do best to accept that sooner rather than later.'
